sidmeister3 First time I heard this song on the podcast, I listened to it 8 times. Touches my rotten soul it does. Favorite track: Panthers on the Mountainside.

ravenwulfgar Hearing the lyrics into the chorus for the first time, I hit one of those urges to hear it in full.

Dude, this made me so homesick. That Chorus Just Hit, Man.

Thanks, I needed that reminder of home.

bengesko This song makes me feel equally homesick for Appalachia and the family still there, but also reminds me of the struggles that had me seeking new frontiers.

kelpiesmoon First heard this song on the podcast Old Gods of Appalachia. It instantly took me back to my childhood, parents had deep roots in the East Tennessee, Western North Carolina mountains. My Daddy was a storyteller , I’d sit on the swing late evenings he’d tell stories of the panthers coming through , I’d get goosebumps as he made sounds like those elusive panthers! Thank you for such a hauntingly beautiful song that touched my soul! You captured the spirit of those mountain people. Favorite track: Panthers on the Mountainside.

about

Written as part of the soundtrack to the horror podcast Old Gods of Appalachia, this song first appeared in Episode 46: Lay Not Upon Us Innocent Blood.

lyrics

We laid my mamaw to rest
the ridge bowed it’s head
and i tattooed her name
on the top of my wrist
6 feet too low
when her heart becomes cold
we’ll sniff our her bones
and see how bright she glows
See i hear that time is a cold hammer’s blow
and that days in this holler are caskets to close
I watch the sun ink and pray it may rise
and hold in the tales i keep buried in my mind

of panthers on the mountainside
the freedom that comes of knowing your bite
I sharpen my teeth pray my nails become claws
to finally dig out of this hole we’ve always called home.

Paw says he’s been here too long
blood wrapped in bones
years in a hole hammering earth wrapped in stone
rotten with his sin
the days all cave in
the USMC fades to gray on his skin
Now back in his prime we said reckless and crude
and here at the end we say stubborn as a mule
he’ll watch the sun sink and pray its his last
and hope that there was light in the tales that he passed

of panthers on the mountainside
the freedom that comes of knowing your bite
I sharpen my teeth pray my nails become claws
to finally dig out of this hole we’ve always called home.

panthers on the mountainside
the freedom that comes of knowing your bite
I sharpen my teeth pray my nails become claws
to finally dig out of this hole I‘ve always called home.

about

Old Gods of Appalachia Asheville, North Carolina

In the mountains of central Appalachia, blood runs as deep as these hollers and just as dark. Since before our kind knew these hills, hearts of unknowable hunger and madness have slumbered beneath them. Old Gods of Appalachia is a horror-anthology podcast set in the shadows of an Alternate Appalachia, a place where digging too deep into the mines was just the first mistake. ... more
